The Bandershin A Short Story
3, 500 words.

There’s a Bandershin in the dam behind the pump house, and Simon is certain it is the reason neighbourhood cats and dogs are disappearing. Or could that be the fault of John, the man next door, who is leaving the wine-colored bruises on his step-daughter’s back? Simon has enough to worry about, with his mother in a wheelchair and schoolwork, but the summer storms are coming and the monsters are drawing closer...

“There’s a bandershin in the dam behind the pump house."

A bandershin is a monster, but in the lives of the protagonist, Simon, there are bigger monsters than the bandershin. Monsters like Beka's new stepfather. This a gem of a short story, beautiful and tightly written. Told from a tight third person perspective, this story is evocative and tightly-written. The sensory detail makes every moment seem alive and the tension as the story slithers toward its climax is incredible. Overall, a great read.

The Bandershin A Short Story edition by Jake Kalago Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Refreshingly original take on Australian folklore and human interaction. While still remaining relatable and familiar making for a truly thrilling tale.
A tightly written horror story about monsters - both supernatural and human. The characterisation is sharp and honest, drawing the reader into the age-old question - what makes a monster? Loved it.
Tightly written and genuinely gripping. A great read from start to finish!
Well written, somewhat predictable story. Not an O. Henry finale but a nice and satisfying story. Worthwhile.
I love this story. The writing is clean and not a word is wasted. The characters are well developed and you quickly care about some, and hate others. I will be looking for more from this interesting author. Excellent book, wish it was longer, the sign of a well written story.
It's bad enough Simon has to deal with his neighbor, John, a man undeserving of the title who beats Simon's friend frequently, but there's just as monstrous a beast hiding in the dam out the back, the bandershin, which feasts on local cats and wildlife and might just be considering Simon for its next meal.

The characters mostly have a lot of depth considering the short length of this tale - though John is a bit the typical wife-beater/child abuser jerk type character, he's still a truly reprehensible antagonist.

The descriptions of the Bandershin (a type of monster I've not heard of before reading this story) are magnificently creepy.
Overall it's a dark, deep horror story which leaves you with a poignant question at the end.
Not a word is wasted, but the details are vividly written.

We are privy to Simon's world as he watches the growing threat of two monsters in his neighborhood the bandershin, and John. There is a slithering sense of suspense as you read the story, wondering which monster poses the greater threat for Simon.

Simon, his mother, and Beka are flawed enough to be human. The behavior of battered people in this story is heartbreakingly similar to what it often is in real life.

The tale's ending leaves the reader with a poignant question or two.
