"Just once, I’d like to fly into a system where everyone doesn’t want to kill us."
Tanis Richards has spent half her life on the Intrepid, guiding the great colony ship, and its two million passengers, across hundreds of light-years. She has risked life, limb and those dearest to her to get this far.
Now she’s within reach of her goal; the New Canaan System, and a normal, stable life. The kind she's only dreamed about. The only remaining hurdle is to strike a deal with the Transcend Interstellar Alliance and trade the Intrepid’s advanced technology for the star system.
If only things were so easy.
The Intrepid’s arrival has upset the delicate balance of power between the Transcend, the Orion Guard, and the Inner Stars. Everything Tanis has ever hoped for is at risk as she fights to build the colony of New Canaan amidst the looming specter of war.

New Canaan A Military Science Fiction Space Opera Epic (Aeon 14 The Orion War Book 2) eBook M. D. Cooper Reviews
I've really enjoyed this series so far, so its with some trepidation that I give this 3.5 stars ,rounded up to 4 because of the previous books.
The book had three parts to it, and I only enjoyed the part focusing on New Canaan. I think many will disagree but I found much of the rest could have been made much shorter. However third would make a short book even shorter.
I do look forward to the next few books, as Tanis has a destiny, and they're is an even bigger scope than we were lead to believe
OK, really probably a 4 except that too much is unexplained (the late arrival of the Sabrina) and the whole point of the novel was to set up a gigantic cliffhanger. And the next novel is not out until late June. It is therefore only half a book.
New Canaan is the best book of the series so far. And that is saying a lot! The entire series is spectacular. I read lots of sci fi books and series, and I can honestly say that M D Cooper's Aeon 14 is without a doubt my very favorite. If you're looking for a great series to sink your teeth into, get the first book of the series and fasten your seat belt and enjoy the ride. Can't wait for Orion Rising this summer.
I didn't like jumping back and forth in time. It is too hard to keep things straight. I am ending the series here... I don't care for books that stop like the end of a chapter. Close out your thoughts in each book.
Editing and grammar were good. Most of the reviews are overrated in my opinion.
Too much use of "incredible technology" to solve plot problems. It is hard to maintain believably in what is going on. The expenditure of resources to fight wars is so unrealistic. A fleet of thousands of star ships is not very real. Plot does fit with rational people.
Overall, enjoyed it tremendously. The sudden 'the end" in the midst of an exciting part of the story had me considering 3 stars. There is a sequel, that I knew from the beginning. 5 stars required a coffee before reconsidering and weighing the entirety of the book. To the author, please don't do this again, if the story is good leaving some loose ends is enough to motivate buying the next in series.
The story resumes where Destiny Lost ended and continues. Transcend does make contact but the diplomats turn out to be Sera's sister and her ex lover, Mark.
Of course Mark has a lot to loose by having Sera rehabilitated by the Hand, a secret paramilitary force of the Transcend. He plans on killing Sera. Sera's sister has her own reasons for Sera not returning to the fold, including assassinating Tanis and grabbing hold of the secrets of the Intrepid.
This is but the introduction to over 400 more pages of intrigue, action and suspense to satisfy any adrenaline junkie till the next installment.
Mind you, I detest cliff hanger endings. But that is a minor gripe considering 400 plus pages reading pleasure.
I discovered M. D. Cooper on as an author in a low price or free enticement to give his books a try. I'm very happy I did. He's either the top, or one of the 2 or 3 authors, I like the most that I discovered buying books on . He's got more books out now than I can keep track of. I really enjoy the Intrepid saga. This is the 5th book in the series starting with the launching of the Intrepid. (There are novels set in that universe before the Intrepid is built. I haven't read any of them.) I like the characters, especially Tanis, the main character of the first book, the universe he's built, the situations, the twists and turns, he builds into the plot, and his style of writing. It flows along--it reads easily without bogging down with excessive detail or over explaining invented science or engineering. I also like his use of intelligent of personal AI residing in brains with their own personalities separate from the person, and the dialog between them. I intend to keep reading this series and probably will try some of his other books as well. Good entertaining Space Opera, in my opinion.
Space battles, politics and backstabbing, both predicted and not and fascinating technology (I love the AIs!), ah what more can a sci-fi fan want? *happy sigh* i'm so glad I picked up the first book of the Orion War on sale on Audible a few months back.
New Canaan expands on what I already knew of the Aeon 14 universe (it's part of a bigger series but unfortunately I had no idea prior to picking Destiny Lost) both with additional characters and planets. The one thing that tends to confuse me is the dating but it's probably just because while listening to a narration I tend to space out on numbers. If it was a physical copy I could easily leaf through and make sense of the dating system but I guess I'll have to accept on faith alone that it makes sense in-universe. The story is complicated so a reader needs to pay attention, especially with all the time jumps and POV changes. The complexity of the entities that try to play God with the fate of humanity makes this truly exceptional in that you're never sure who the "good guys" are, apart from the Intrepid crew. So you end up making your own attachments to certain characters and even at the end of book 2 you're unsure if you've made the right choice.
So would I recommend this to other readers? Absolutely yes! But only if you like your space opera with a lot of backstage machinations and you're not in only for the space battles.
